Ctenidial autotomy in Corbicula fluminea in response to massive granulomas.
Large granulomas (greater than 2 millimeters in diameter), stimulated by the presence of and formed around necrotic larval tissue in the inner demibranchs of Corbicula fluminea, are eliminated by autotomy. Granulocytes invade and destroy ctenidial epithelium adjacent to the granuloma, causing it and the granuloma to slough away into the mantle cavity, where they are removed as pseudofeces.
متن کاملEfficiency of Cu, Ag, and Fe Nanoparticles As Detergents Preservatives Against E. coli and S. aureus
In this study, Cu, Ag, and Fe nanoparticles (NPs) are used in shampoo, hand washing liquid (HWL) and dish washing liquid (DWL) instead of the conventional synthetic preservatives such as isothiazolinones; since the latter often act as potent sensitizers that leads to development of allergic contact dermatitis. The above NPs are considerably effective against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus ...
متن کاملIn-vitro Antifungal Activity of Leaf Extracts of Leucas Aspera and Leucas Zeylanica
The aim of the present study is to probe the antimicrobial activities of methanol leaf extract of Leucas sp. Antifungal susceptibilities of certain clinically isolated dermatophytes to methanol extracts of Leucas aspera and Leucas zeylanica leaves were performed using agar well diffusion method. The result obtained shows that all the extracts expressed remarkable antifungal activity with zone o...
متن کاملSodium Gill Potential as a Tool to Monitor Valve Closure Behavior in Freshwater Clam Corbicula fluminea in Response to Copper
Valve closure behavior in freshwater clam Corbicula fluminea is a biologically sensitive endpoint. The purpose of this paper was to derive an electrophysiological response model of C. fluminea to assess copper (Cu)-sodium (Na) interactions in gill membrane, whereby valve closure behavior and Cu toxicity could be monitored. The proposed model was based on the integration of Cu bioavailability, N...
متن کاملEffect of selenium exposure on the freshwater bivalve Corbicula fluminea
Selenium is essential for most of living organisms. In normoxic to moderately hypoxic freshwaters, Se exists predominantly in the (+VI) and (+IV) oxidation states as selenate and selenite respectively, whereas in the biota it is incorporated as Se (-II) or Se (0). At low concentrations, it acts against oxidative damages, but it may be toxic at higher levels. In filter feeders, such as the fresh...
